Marathon Clothing for Tall Runners: What to Wear Over 26.2 Miles

Marathon Clothing for Tall Runners

Most running kit is designed for runners around 5'10". If you're 6'5" or taller, standard sizing means short hems, riding waistbands, and restrictive fits that become unbearable over a 4–6 hour marathon effort. Here's what to look for — and what to avoid.

The Golden Rule: Nothing New on Race Day

Every item you wear on race day must have been tested in training. Chafing, riding shorts, and uncomfortable waistbands are manageable on a 10km run. Over 26.2 miles, they become race-ending problems.

Tops

For tall runners, the most important feature in a running top is extended length. A top that sits at your hip on the hanger will ride up to your midriff by mile 10.

  • Look for tops with a body length of 80cm+ (size XL/XXL in standard brands often falls short)
  • Avoid cotton — it holds sweat and causes chafing
  • Opt for moisture-wicking, four-way stretch fabrics
  • Flatlock seams reduce friction over long distances

At löpa, every top is cut with extended length and athletic proportions for tall men. Shop tops.

Shorts

  • Minimum 7" inseam — ideally 9" for taller runners
  • Built-in compression liner to prevent thigh chafing
  • Secure waistband that won't roll or drop under your stride
  • Side pockets or back zip pocket for gels

Socks

Don't underestimate socks. Over 26 miles, a poor sock causes blisters that can end your race.

  • Technical running socks with cushioned sole and arch support
  • Merino or synthetic blends — not cotton
  • Double-layer socks (e.g. Wrightsock, Drymax) are worth it for marathon distance
  • Wear the exact socks you'll race in during your long training runs

Anti-Chafe Essentials

Tall runners have more surface area — and more chafe risk. Apply anti-chafe balm (Body Glide, Vaseline, or similar) to:

  • Inner thighs
  • Underarms
  • Nipples (yes, really — this is a serious issue over 26 miles)
  • Any seam lines that have caused irritation in training

What to Avoid

  • Standard-length tees that expose your lower back
  • Shorts with short inseams that ride up
  • Anything with a loose or elasticated waistband that drops under movement
  • New kit on race day — ever
